DAILY COURIER – The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Dr. Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC). Yusuf’s confirmation came after the upper chamber adopted the report of the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population during plenary on Tuesday.

Alongside Yusuf, the Senate also confirmed the nominations of Hon. Kigbu Joseph Haruna from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State as National Commissioners of the Commission. The confirmation followed a rigorous screening process conducted by the committee.

Presenting the report, the committee chairman, Senator Victor Umeh (LP–Anambra Central), said all three nominees were found to be qualified, competent, and suitable to serve in their respective capacities. He explained that the nominees demonstrated a clear understanding of the mandate of the Commission and expressed commitment to advancing Nigeria’s demographic and data management systems.

“The Committee, after careful scrutiny of the nominees’ credentials and performance during the screening exercise, found them worthy of the appointments. There was no petition or adverse report against any of the nominees,” Umeh stated.

He added that the confirmation of the new appointees would further strengthen the Commission’s capacity ahead of the anticipated national population and housing census.

Dr. Yusuf’s appointment as NPC Chairman is expected to inject new energy into the agency, which has been at the center of preparations for Nigeria’s first national census in nearly two decades. His leadership is anticipated to focus on credible data gathering, digital census planning, and efficient coordination with states and local governments.

Senators who contributed during the plenary commended the Committee for its thorough screening process and urged the new leadership of the NPC to ensure transparency and professionalism in the management of national demographic data.

The Senate President, in his remarks after the confirmation, congratulated the appointees and charged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by delivering accurate and reliable population data that would aid national planning and development.

With the confirmation, Dr. Aminu Yusuf officially takes over the reins of the National Population Commission, alongside the new commissioners, to steer the agency’s activities toward achieving credible population statistics for Nigeria.
